Bringing metaphors to life through corporeal improvisation

‘MetaFora’ presents a form of improvisational theatre grounded in both corporeal and musical expression. Unlike ‘battles’ that focus on virtuosic performance, the intensity on stage arises from the challenge of bringing a metaphor to life.

In front of an audience, actors, dancers, and musicians will have just a few minutes to transport the audience into a poetic universe.

The word metaphor comes from the Greek roots: ‘Meta’, meaning ‘beyond’ or ‘after’, and ‘phor’ (pherō), meaning ‘I bear’ or ‘I carry’.  In Portuguese, ‘Metafora’ carries a similar meaning, though ‘Meta’ can also mean ‘goal’ and ‘For a’ means ‘outside’. Thus, the aim of ‘MetaFora’ is to push the boundaries of imagination beyond the usual and the ordinary.

The event is structured in two parts:

* In the first part, selected alumni and students from the Acting, Dance, and Music programmes will improvise together based on random groupings chosen from a hat.

* In the second part, these students will collaborate with volunteers from the audience in duos, trios, or larger groups.

The goal of MetaFora at LASALLE is to provide a space where current and former students from the Acting, Dance, and Music programmes can improvise together in a relaxed and enjoyable environment, without the pressure of a formal performance.

The challenge of improvising offers both the excitement and the joy of spontaneous creation.
