Physical and Vocal Training for actors/dancers

June 14, 2016 / Comments Off on Physical and Vocal Training for actors/dancers

This workshop focuses on the development of the actor/dancer physical presence through Leela Alaniz’s method, derived from her 15 years of research and training with actors. This work is based, first, on exercises from The Organic Lineage of Jerzy Grotowski, second, on the Corporeal Mime technique of Etienne Decroux, and finally, on the meeting of these two methods so as to develop the creative autonomy of the actor/dancer.

The exercises of the organic process liberate the energetic flux from the spinal column, and propagate to transform the physical body. The actor/dancer thus develops a concentration and identifies with his physical, emotional and mental centers. In the practice of Corporeal Mime, the actor/dancer finds the possibility of creating his or her own personal compositions in isolating different parts of the body, in mastering its articulations, and in playing with varying speeds, resistances and designs of corporeal movement.

The work developed with rigor by Leela Alaniz responds to the understanding of one’s self by listening to the impulses, by the abandonment of stereotypical attitudes and systems, by the exploration of new ways of the body movement and by the discovery and respect for the inherent organicity of this body.

Training Program :

  • Exercises of the Organic Lineage – research of organicity, energetic flux, opening the blockages of the body, and of the release.
  • Exercises of attention and interior awakening
  • Stage Presence
  • Corporeal Mime – Technique Etienne Decroux – articulations, counterweights, dynamo-rhythm, intra-corporeal and inter-spatial causalities.
  • Alexander Technique – relaxation and liberation of the articulations
  • Voice – corporeal resonators, text and singing
  • Improvisations, play

This workshop is open to all actors, dancers, musicians, puppeteers, professionals or amateurs.

Elizabeth de Roza Master Class 2016

April 17, 2016 / No Comments

As part of the project The Body’s Journey, we have the pleasure to invite you to a conference/demonstration followed by a Master Class of Elizabeth de Roza, teacher of Lasalle College of the Arts, School of Theatre and Dance, Singapore.

Conference/Demonstration

Exploration of the body-in-motion through Kalaripayattu (traditional South Indian Martial Arts form).

How the training of Kalaripayattu leads to the embodiment of physical awareness of an actor. Investigating ‘the point of resonance’ that is akin to ‘presence’. Through this investigation, the actor develops a physical score that works on 5 basic rules of the body-in-space (soft fireworks). This active visceral response paired with the intellectually vivid physical vocabulary of Kalaripayattu retrained the actor’s body awakened to the creation of the body in performance (image-actions).

Topics addressed will be:

  1. Exploration of the ideology of Kalaripayattu as a vehicle for the embodiment of physical awareness and breath-in-motion
  2. Investigation of the heighten spine as a tool for the development of physical action
  3. The exploration of the 5 poses in Kalaripayattu as an active visceral response to ‘awaken’ the actor’s body to the creation of the body in performance (image-actions).

MetaFora – Paris May 14

April 9, 2016 / Comments Off on MetaFora – Paris May 14

We are excited to announce an event of corporeal improvisation that will surprise you, MetaFora:

Saturday, May 14, 2016, 8pm

Micadanses

15 Rue Geoffroy l’Asnier, 75004 Paris

Studio May B

Public : Tout Public Durée : 90 – 120 minutes

Entrance : 5 €

BRINGING METAPHORS TO LIFE THROUGH CORPOREAL IMPROVISATION

MetaFora presents a form of improvisational theatre based on corporeal and vocal expression. Unlike the ‘battles’ that focus on virtuosic performance, the stage intensity result from the challenge of bringing to life a metaphor. In front of an audience, the actors/dancers/singers/musicians have only a few minutes to transport the audience into a poetic universe. Metaphor, “Meta” derives from the Greek meaning “across, and after,” and “phor” (pherō), meaning “I bear, carry”. “Metafora” is the Portuguese translation. While it carries the same sense as in English, “Meta” can also mean “goal” and “fora” mean “outside”. Thus, the goal of the metaphors is to stretch the boundaries of the imagination beyond the habitual and the mundane. It is going “in through the outdoor” according to Led Zeppelin. The event takes place in two parts: In the first part, a group of selected or “invited” performing artists play together based on random hat selection. In the second part, the “invited” performing artists improvise with volunteers of the public in duo, trios.

What is Mim’provisation?

Started in June, 2010, Mim’provisation grew out of the personal necessities of mime artists to improvise and challenge themselves and their craft. While contact improvisations, improvisational theatre, and breakdance battles already exist; Mim’provisation fills a gap and breathes fresh light air to the universe of physical expression. On this stage of corporeal improvisation, the intensity of a battle in front of a very critical audience results in poetic construction and unique expression. Rather than virtuosic performance measures, improvisational play focuses more on how the imaginary springs to life.

We are living in a post-modern era of mime where the original modern masters like Etienne Decroux, Marcel Marceau, Jacques Lecoq, and Henryk Tomaszewski have passed away, and where the art of mime has evolved into budding interdisciplinary variations such as mime-dance, clown mime, abstract mime, and physical theatre. Mim’provisation offers an encounter for today’s vast array of artists and their unique forms, personalities, and talent to come together to witness, share and play together. And through this live challenge and dialogue, a more heightened level of beauty and creative surprise blooms.

For the unsuspecting audience, Mim’provisation will awaken the imagination and touch the soul from laughter to amazement. Witnessing some of the best mime artists, they participate in the process of evolution of the contemporary mime that yearns to redefine itself beyond the dominant stereotype of the “white-masked pantomime”.

The event takes place in two parts:

In the first part, a group of selected or “invited” mime artists demonstrate their skills. They are guided by an invited master of ceremony.

In the second part, the public become the actors and are invited to improvise, in duo, trios according to a given theme.
